Wireless security
Wireless Access Points, or WAPs, permit Internet users to connect to the Internet without network cables. The data is broadcast from a personal computer to a router. The router connects to the Bright House Networks supplied modem for Internet access.
When using wireless technology, there are two steps to keep your data safe:
- Connecting computers wirelessly to safeguard data and avoid legal problems
- Securing wireless the router
Failure to secure a wireless router puts your data at risk of being stolen and could lead to your computer's being used to commit crimes such as illegal spamming and denial of service attacks.
Most wireless routers use Network Address Translation (NAT). NAT makes it more difficult for hackers to gain access to your home network. Wireless routers also use Wireless Equivalent Privacy (WEP). Despite its weaknesses, WEP provides a level of security that can deter casual snooping.
Bright House Networks provides technical support for routers and switches with Home Networking. A Bright House Networks representative can also provide details about the service.
You can install it using the step-by-step instructions that come with wireless routers. Or, you can obtain the services of a computer pro.
