Peer-to-Peer Dangers

Peer-to-Peer file sharing (P2P) is, in a nutshell, a way to download and distribute files or programs from other computers by installing a P2P software client on your computer (such as Lime Wire, BearShare, KaZaA, Morpheus, BitTorrent, etc...). Typically, it's used for downloading music, movies and software programs. Not only is it illegal to download and/or distribute copyrighted material, but P2P activity is the number one source of how computers become infected and hacked.

Risks from P2P usage

  • Viruses/Trojans - Infections spread like wildfire on P2P networks. Any file downloaded via P2P may contain a virus/Trojan horse that will affect your computer.
  • Hackers - Your IP is constantly being broadcast whenever connected to a P2P network. Combine with the P2P software allowing file access to your computer and you have a hacker's playground - and they know it.
  • Legal issues - If you are identified as downloading or distributing copyrighted material, the MPAA/RIAA can peruse legal action against you. We do receive subpoenas about legal action for this activity, so it is a real concern.
  • Identity theft - Some P2P software will make all files on your computer available including those you would prefer to keep private - such as personally identifying information, financial, and medical information.
  • Spyware - Some P2P clients themselves contain spyware/adware.
  • Child pornography and other illegal content - P2P networks can be used to distribute child pornography and other offensive material. You are responsible for any of this material being downloaded and/or distributed by your computer.

The FBI has recognized the dangers inherent in P2P file sharing and has distributed a letter on the FBI Website for users of P2P software, which is available for reading here: http://www.fbi.gov/cyberinvest/cyberedletter.htm.
